Herschel C. Ligon, 92, agricultural leader, dies

March 12, 2010 – Hershel Cloyd Ligon, an articulate spokesman for agriculture and prominent Wilson County citizen, died yesterday at 92.

Sen. Mae Beavers

The Senate and House Judiciary Committees approved legislation this week to attack a major source of illegal drug activity in Tennessee, said Sen. Mae Beavers, who is chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The bill, Senate Bill 3027, would stiffen penalties against those who get prescriptions in another state and return to distribute the drugs illegally in Tennessee.

Phillip Warren enters race for Wilson mayor

March 12, 2010 – Lebanon real estate broker and long-time Republican Party activist Phillip Warren entered the race for Wilson County mayor yesterday.

Warren served as state Sen. Mae Beavers' finance chairman in her 2006 campaign. He said he shares her conservative values and would not have entered the mayor's race had she not dropped out earlier yesterday to seek re-election to the Senate.

Lebanon January sales tax down 24% from '09

March 13, 2010 - Lebanon's sales tax collections were down some 24 percent in January compared to the same month in 2009.

"I think the weather may have had a lot to do with that," said Mayor Philip Craighead.
